Medicare M10 Speech Pathology Services

What Is M10?

Previously known as: 82020 plan or Autism plan.

Includes:

  • Assessment: up to 8 services per lifetime to assist with diagnosis and/or contribute to treatment planning.
  • Treatment: up to 20 services per lifetime.

Eligibility: patients under 25 with neurodevelopmental conditions

Medical Item Prerequisite: Item 139 (GP) or 137 (Specialist)

Changes to M10 Eligibility

As of 1st March 2026, Medicare M10 has expanded to include those diagnosed with:

  • Speech Sound Disorders
  • Cleft Palate
  • Stuttering

Session Length Requirements

  • Assessment Sessions – must be a minimum of 50 minutes
  • Therapy Sessions – must be a minimum of 30 mins

Rebate

Rebate is $87.25

Not Eligible

  • Language difficulties.
  • Social skills difficulties.
  • Swallowing disorders.
  • Feeding disorders.
  • Developmental Language disorder.

M10 Referrals

  • GP can decide on eligibility – don’t need to wait for a referral from a Speech Pathologist. If in doubt, refer to the Speech Pathologist and request an M10 assessment to confirm diagnosis.

  • M10 does not require a GP management plan – it’s just a referral letter.
  • A separate referral from the eligible medical practitioner is required for each allied health practitioner providing the service.

  • A new referral is needed for each course of assessment (4x sessions) or course of therapy (10x sessions).

  • Allied health practitioner need to send GP a report or letter after each course to request another course.
